Day of the Dead in Mexico City

This isn’t your typical Mexican all‑inclusive resort getaway — it’s something deeper. Step off the tourist trail and into a Mexico that hums with tradition, color, and soul.

We’ll join locals in vibrant Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations, from candlelit ofrendas (altars) and marigold‑lined streets to face‑painting and parades that honor life and memory. Wander artisan markets bursting with sugar skulls and handmade crafts, sip mezcal in UNESCO‑listed neighborhoods, and savor authentic street food that fuels the festivities.

Day Trips & Local Excursions Take a sunrise hot‑air balloon ride over the ancient pyramids of Teotihuacán, watching the first light spill across temples built to honor gods and ancestors — a breathtaking reminder of Mexico’s timeless spirit. Back in Mexico City, explore one of the world’s richest museum collections, where history, art, and tradition come alive at every turn.

This journey blends culture, connection, and off‑the‑beaten‑path adventure with the magic of one of the world’s most iconic celebrations.

The Excitment of Mexico

Day 1 - 2

Mexico City is never more alive than during the Day of the Dead. Streets are lined with marigolds, plazas glow with altars, and the city’s colonial architecture becomes the backdrop for vibrant celebrations. With our local guide, we’ll set out on a walking tour through the historic center, weaving past cathedrals, murals, and festive displays that tell the story of Mexico’s past and present.

From there, we’ll shift into flavor: our food tour that takes us deep into the city’s culinary heart. Expect tacos sizzling on street corners, tequila tastings that highlight Mexico’s proud traditions, and seasonal specialties like pan de muerto, the sweet bread baked for this holiday. It’s a feast for both the palate and the spirit.

As night falls, the energy transforms again. We’ll step into the high‑octane world of Lucha Libre, where masked wrestlers clash in a spectacle of athleticism, drama, and pure entertainment. The roar of the crowd, the colorful costumes, and the playful theatrics capture the same bold, vibrant spirit that defines the Day of the Dead itself.

Ancient Pyramids

Day 3

As the first sign of a golden sunrise pierces through the horizon, your hot air balloon gently lifts off into the sky, carrying you above the ancient city of Teotihuacán. Below, the towering Pyramid of the Sun stands majestically, bathed in the glow of the morning light. The vast expanse of ruins stretches beneath you. Optional excursion, but not to miss!

After landing, we’ll continue with a guided tour of Teotihuacán, the “City of the Gods.” Once Mesoamerica’s most powerful metropolis, it thrived between 100 BCE and 550 CE. Home to the towering Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, its vast ruins tell the story of a civilization that shaped history. You’ll see intricate carvings of jaguar heads, stars, and snake rattles up close on your guided journey through this wonder.

Feeling like pushing your boundaries? Mexico’s culinary scene is as bold as its culture, and if you’re ready to push your taste buds to the limit, you’re in for a wild ride. What’s on the menu – crunchy fried cricket anyone, or tantalize your tastebuds with escamoles (we won’t ruin this surprise)? These aren’t just bizarre bites -  they are deeply rooted in tradition, packed with flavor and surprisingly delicious.

Upon returning to Mexico City, the rest of the afternoon is yours. Explore one of the city’s world‑class museums, indulge in more local eats, or let the rhythm of the city sweep you into an evening of music and dancing.

Day 4

Morning — Welcoming Traditions

Choose Your Experience

We’ll begin the day by joining a local family or artisan workshop to help create a traditional ofrenda (altar). Together we’ll decorate with marigolds, candles, sugar skulls, and papel picado, stepping right into the heart of the celebration. From there, we’ll travel to a decorated cemetery such as Mixquic, where graves glow with flowers, candles, and offerings. Families gather to honor loved ones, and our guides will share stories and context to help us respectfully connect with these traditions.

Optional Morning Experiences

For those who want to fully embrace the holiday, an experienced local artist will offer traditional face painting and attire. With iconic calavera (skull) designs brought to life, you’ll step into the festivities looking and feeling part of the tradition.

Alternative Activities

Prefer a more relaxed start? No problem — guests can explore a local market filled with holiday decorations and treats, or enjoy a relaxed café visit with pan de muerto and hot chocolate.

Afternoon/Evening — Festive Spirit

As night falls, the city glows with candles and music. We’ll gather to experience the energy of Mexico City’s celebrations — from lively parades to cultural performances — soaking in the atmosphere of remembrance and joy that defines this holiday.

It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in the spirit of Día de los Muertos and feel the heartbeat of Mexico City’s celebrations.

Day 5 - Departure Day

Our official journey comes to a close today, but that doesn’t mean your adventure has to end. If you’re ready to linger a little longer, Mexico City offers endless opportunities to keep exploring — from vibrant neighborhoods and world-class museums to cozy cafés and festive plazas. Day trips abound. Just reach out to your host who is ready to help coordinate!
